Dr. Knightly was without a doubt, one of the most professional, knowledgeable and experienced Psychiatrists I have ever seen. Honestly, it was an appointment I would look forward to, rather than just any generic Doctor visit, which we all definitely know is not where we want to be. His follow up and true commitment to his patients is hard to find these days. 5 Stars is not enough. He is better than any rating scale and I know will humbly continue to help as many people as he can.

What Is Psychotherapy

Mental Health Psychotherapy (CBT, DBT, and Psychodynamic Therapy) in Stamford CT

Medically Reviewed By Dr. Thomas Knightly

Psychotherapy is a popular form of treatment in the management of mental health disorders. It is often referred to as ‘talk therapy’ and is most commonly aimed at relieving cognitive and behavioral manifestations of mental health difficulties. This mainly involves psychoeducation, exploring the connection between maladaptive behavioral patterns and thought processes, and learning relevant coping strategies¹. Discussing personal experiences of mental health difficulties is an important component of psychotherapy. At Evolve Brain Health, we prioritize your comfort in sharing personal information. We specialize in evidence-based practices – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic therapy.

CBT is a versatile variation of psychotherapy and can be easily personalized to each individual. It involves observing one’s own maladaptive thoughts and behaviors and learning to reframe and substitute their thoughts and behavior with healthy alternatives.

DBT is a psychotherapy alternative, derived from CBT. Clients are taught to implement mindfulness to promote the acceptance of their own maladaptive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The process of acceptance is conceptualized to facilitate change. Ongoing research demonstrates it is one of the preferred therapy approaches in addressing significant emotional dysregulation, self-destructive behaviors, and suicidal ideation².

Psychodynamic therapy takes a unique approach to CBT and DBT, with an emphasis on the exploration of past events and their sustained influence on present-day cognition, behavior, and emotion. It aims to promote self-awareness and build insight into one’s personal experiences³.

How Effective is Psychotherapy?

The National Institute of Health (NIH) promotes psychotherapy as an effective approach to managing symptoms of mental health disorders. Their 2015 review of anxiety treatment demonstrated empirical evidence for this especially in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Importantly, they observed a 75% success rate for those receiving psychotherapy for 6 months⁴.

Compared to Our Other Treatment Options?

Other treatments offered at Evolve Brain Health include TMS and Esketamine therapy. They also work towards reducing symptoms of mental health difficulties. We offer TMS and Esketamine as adjunctive therapies to psychotherapy to further enhance treatment.

Esketamine is a fast relief solution for depression which is administered via a nasal spray and promotes balanced neurotransmitter activity. It typically yields results much faster than psychotherapy⁵. Learn more about Spravato →

Evolve Health also offers TMS therapy, which is a non-invasive technique to stimulate the brain by using magnetic pulses. Learn more about TMS therapy→

What if I Need Medications?

All of our care is patient-centered and we always opt for well-rounded treatment, as per our client’s preferences. Psychotherapy may be used in conjunction with pharmacotherapy (ie. prescribed medication) to augment the effects of psychotherapy. To facilitate this, we offer a Medication Management Plan

Is Psychotherapy Covered by Insurance?

Once you have received a medical diagnosis, psychotherapy can be covered by most insurance plans.

What to Expect from Psychotherapy at Evolve Brain Health

We also specialize in TMS, Esketamine, and medication management. Determining what treatment would be best suited for you would require a discussion about your personal preferences. We are more than happy to discuss what is the best option for you in a consultation.

At Evolve Brain Health, every psychotherapy plan is different. Your psychotherapy protocol will be unique and specific to you. We will have an initial consultation in order to determine which specialist is best suited to you. You and your therapist will develop therapy goals together and work towards them with CBT or DBT. Sessions will usually last between 45 minutes and 1 hour, with a weekly or biweekly arrangement. We endeavor to create a safe space and provide you with the tools to grow and achieve your therapy goals.

"I highly recommend Evolve Brain Health if you are considering TMS. My experience was extremely positive. Dr. Knightly is very bright, compassionate and patient. He took time to answer all of my questions without ever making me feel rushed. It’s very easy to schedule appointments and always runs right on time. The treatment is very easy-in and out in less than 15 minutes with no side effects!"

"Dr. He is better than any rating scale and I know will humbly continue to help as many people as he can."

"Dr Knightly is empathetic, professional & informative. He’s walked me through the process & has answered all my questions without hesitation, even the questions I’ve repeatedly asked. During my first session I was overwhelmed with emotion (I’ve tried many things to try to treat my depression) & he validated my experience & made me feel comfortable. I recommend anyone who is interested in TMS to visit his office, you‘re in good hands."
